Water is the world’s most important natural resource. Yet an estimated 1 billion people on the planet do not have access to clean, safe drinking water. As a result, a child dies every 15 seconds from a water related disease, and over half the world’s hospital beds are filled with patients affected by water related illnesses. 80 countries are experiencing serious water shortages and millions are forced to drink from polluted water sources.
The water crisis dramatically impacts the lives of women & children. The average distance a woman in walks to collect water is 3.75 miles. This daily task can consume as much as eight hours, leaving no time for education or economic development. Their life is collecting dirty, polluted water that will more than likely make them and their family sick. The daily carrying of water containers to and from the polluted sources, weighing over 40lbs, can also result in permanent damage to women's health such as chronic fatigue, spinal and pelvic deformities, and effects on reproductive health including spontaneous abortion.
So why water? Because it saves lives and transforms communities.
